Stone carving - the Glen AngelCuir rud beag ama ar leataobh sa dóigh is go dtig leat pléisiúr a bhaint as an turas ó Bhaile Dhún na nGall go Gleann Cholm Cille. Tá radharc le fáil ar Chuan Dhún na nGall ar feadh tamaill mhaith - agus gach radharc acu sin suntasach agus sultmhar. Leann an bóthar ó na Cealla Beaga go Cill Chartha, agus o sin go dtí droichead na Carrige ta tú anois í bparoiste Ghleanncholmcille.

You will find a warm welcome in our Gaeltacht or Gaelic (Irish-speaking) area. Road signs are lettered in both English and Irish languages, and sometimes only in Irish.

Glencolmcille, County Donegal, Ireland.

The road curves back and forth along the edge of seascapes. It is a inspiring drive, so much beautiful scenery, and no end in sight.

Stone carving - the Glen AngelGive yourself time to enjoy the drive from Donegal Town 'into' Glencolmcille. Spectacular views of Donegal Bay continue for sometime - one picture-postcard view after another. The main road from Donegal Town passes through Killybegs, a bustling fishing port with rows of bright red, green, or blue trawlers docked in the harbor. Strong salty sea and fish aromas fill the air. Sea gulls screech in the sky and spiral down toward the boats. Follow the road from Killybegs (signposted to Kilcar, Carrick and Glencolmcille). Head towards Carrick and when you cross over the bridge at Carrick you have reached the Parish of Glencolmcille. After visiting Carrick carry on towards the valley of Glencolmcille and you will reach Cashel.

Stone carving - the Glen AngelYou will be travelling through endless acres of soggy, tea black boglands, crossed over with soft green and red heather covered mountains and hills will loom ahead. The road becomes even more narrow. The landscape is stark and bleak yet also beautiful, lonely yet alluring, wending its way towards the mountains.

Stone carving - the Glen AngelContinue on the Glen Road from Carrick and you will reach Cashel - a town in the middle of the Glen Valley, referred to as Glencolmcille or simply as "Glen" by the locals. Explore Cashel on foot, walk to the beach, opposite the beach you will find the Folk Village Museum. Walk a circle around 'the block' passing the wonderful Protestant Church.

Beyond Cashel the road continues with the most incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and Glen Head - a spectacular tableau of green fields and sea-splashed cliffs.

Bheadh muid an-bhuíoch dá ndéanfadh lucht eagraithe turas, grúpaí scoile agus busanna socrú linn roimh ré le cinntiú gur féidir linn freastal orthu.

We would be very grateful if tour operators, school groups or coaches would book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Tapestry workshops, traditional music nights and Irish culture events will be available during the summer. Please e-mail or ring us on 074-9730017 / 9730334 for details. The folk village is open from Easter Saturday until the end of September.
